Do you have the time for PR?

Publicity is a time commitment. If you want media attention, you have to operate on the media’s schedule. Sure, sometimes there will be media appearances that can be scheduled weeks or months in advance, but for the most part, it is a fast-paced industry. To keep up and take advantage of media opportunities, you need to be able to move with the speed of the news.

Most people understand this, but occasionally we run into the following scenario:

  • A story breaks that we know one of our clients will be a perfect expert for (Ebola, Malaysia Airlines plane crash, local shooting, etc.)
  • The media calls asking for an expert to weigh in on the situation.
  • We secure our client an interview.
  • The client says that an interview today won’t work with their busy schedule and that tomorrow would be better.

Unfortunately, the news won’t way until tomorrow. Reporters won’t wait for a more convenient time. If you aren’t ready, they’ll move on with their story and use another expert.

When seeking publicity, will you be available to take advantage of the opportunities?
